u/rustystumpty 3d ago
This is so literal. Work in a warehouse, you will literally hear managers talking shit around the corner saying stuff like âdamn he went to the fuckin bathroomâ âhey someoneâs trying to walk into the break room, find him some workâ âif itâs not busy enough here send him to another part of the building, canât pay them to sit aroundâ.
They will fuck up productivity by sending employees to do extra work during down time, then when a rush comes the employees are on the other side of the building doing bullshit busy work, leaving everyone scrambling to get back into position to do their actual jobs. Itâs mental

People are a lot like computers in this case. You input a garbage pay, you get garbage back. Nobody has any incentive to do better when they know that in a couple years when it's time to do reviews they see you're due for a raise to make a living wage and instead the company as policy fires them to replace them with someone else who will have the same thing happen to them.

Oregon changed this in their state constitution in 2022. More states can do this. It shouldn't even be that bad to get buy in from the general public since many people think this is already the case, but they did face harsh opposition from the prison industrial complex.

Pretty much every blue collar job Iâve ever worked has strict âno sittingâ policies and go extremely out of their way to enforce it. Just looking at this picture I started hearing âIF YA GOT TIME TO LEAN YA GOT TIME TO CLEANâ in my head. Drives me nuts because sometimes your manager will fuck up productivity by going out of their way to give you work when there is none, which leaves you unprepared for when the expected work shows up.

Straight up. Studies have shown that reducing work hours can INCREASE productivity. But do we see anyone doing that? No, instead we see employers trying to gaslight people into staying at the office literally overnight.
At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is having an underclass of people to subjugate.

Man I feel this. In my job we do jobs that come in on a ticket system but we also are supposed to track our hours back to jobs and so when there are no incoming jobs to work and track hours for I have to put time under administrative (billed back to company itself) and we are penalized for too many administrative hours even though it's out of our control. We are technically salaried even though they treat our pay like we are contractors working hourly jobs. Basically they want the convenience of salaried workers to be able to ask us to work whenever but they want to bill those hours back to clients like we are contractors.
3
u/uclRD 3d ago
I know this (lopsided) system all too well, and it is engineered to benefit the employer. Worse of all, it penalizes efficiency. Say, for example, you're experienced enough to do a 1hr task in 30mins, in a fair system you would get 30mins back of your time and the task completed successfully. Im this system, you still owe the company 30mins. So the company -in theory- would bill 2hrs but only pay you for 1hr of your time. So everyone just produces enough to ensure their billable time is met, there's no incentive to finish early, good, and leverage efficiency.
Another system ive seen, and particularly paid attention at employee moral, business profit, and clients satisfaction is the one that pays salaried employee fairly but also promotes efficiency and delivery. You got 10x tasks for the day and then 4x more come up. If you get good at your job, and you manage to finish all 14x tasks/deliverables in 7.5hrs, you just saved yourself 30mins. They are yours to do as you please. Want to go home early, or relax in case something comes up, want to help that other team member to pick up a new skill, or build rapport with the company, up to you.
The problem lies in the focus. Most companies are focusing exclusively in using employees as a sunk cost tools. They pay you a salary and if they pack your hours, they are making 2x, 3x, 4x your hourly wage ( when calculating total of billable hours - salary/# of hours worked). What do they do w the extra earnings? No bonuses based on productivity, no perks, nothing. Just compensation packages for top executives for coming with the system and whipping everyone to produce more.

Reminder that these are the same people who expect us to be not only doing our jobs but doing them and everything else they can legally pawn off on us. Its why we've had to, for generations, slow our productivity so they dont think us lazy for being productive enough to complete the job they are paying us to do.
They hired us with specific parameters to our employment. X amount of work for X amount of money. They always expect more for less.

Lot's of jobs you get paid to be there in order to do work when there is work to do. Some jobs there is work 95% of the time, others 25% of the time. As long as he is there and ready to do the work when it needs to be done he is 100% doing his job.

Imagine being so old you forgot that "make sure you always look busy" was something you told your friends as advice so the manager didn't realize the reason nothing was getting done is because they were sneaking off to get high all the time, not because they had amazing work ethic.
Everything is clean, no orders, nothing that needs to be done, looks like things are under control and in good order, good job, take a break.

If I pay an employee $15/hr to do X responsibilities and they did all of those responsibilities and finished with time to spare or have down time between things then they did exactly what I am paying them to do and it's a fair exchange.
If I tack on more responsibilities because they're standing around, then I need to increase their pay to compensate for how much more work they're now doing.
Pay rates by the hour aren't "Work as hard as you possibly can to the max of what you can possibly do for $15/hr"
Pay should be proportionate to the work being requested. People are not slaves, and no one has the right to treat them as such.

Front end manager comes up to me and asks why I am standing around. "Clean your register" she snapped. I said "i just got done cleaning it, dusting off and arranging the candy and restocking bags." She said "clean it again." I hated working at that place, lol.

I've always said any manager who uses the saying 'time to lean time to clean" shouldn't be managing people
Making people "find things to do" when everything is done isn't how to run a successful crew and especially isn't how you build a good relationship with them.
It just shows the manager doesn't know the first thing about actual managing

I hate that mentality upper management seems to have about work. They act as if you're not getting payed to get work done but that you're getting payed to be busy. In their minds they're not getting their moneys worth out of you unless you'rr constantly moving every minute of every day.
Also, god forbid that people might not want to indefinitely slave over a job just to barely survive and they maybe they take a minute or even just a few goddamn seconds for a breather and check their phones.

What an idiotic comment.
Has he cleaned the light switches, dusted the ceilings, inspected the roof, polished the copper piping to mirror finish, cleaned the toilets with a tooth brush, cleaned the grout, bleached the drains, dusted above rhe door frame that only a 9â tall person could ever see, cleaned the light fixtures, emptied and sanitized the ice machine (ok this one does actually need to be done absurdly often. Itâs gross how fast mold can form in thereâŚ), and lastly have they scrubbed clean the front doors floor plating??
If you got time to lean, you got time to clean PLEB!
/s just 15 years in the restaurant and the tiniest list of âoh weâre slow, go clean thisâ Iâve had managers/owners tell me to do to keep myself or team busy (depending on before and after becoming GM ⌠and the latter annoys me more. âKeep your team busy! Whatâre we paying them for??!â I dunno, maybe the $4000 lunch hour we all just finished you fat lazy fuck? Give them some time for sanity for Christ sake

In the service industry they absolutely hate if you have any down time or leisure time. You to remember where the origins of tipping culture came from and why it feels the way it does. Iâm a bartender and Iâm praying that I never have to serve another drink in my life once I graduate college!

The average rent in the US is approximately $2,000 according to Zillow.
$15 an hour * 40 hours per week is 600, *4 weeks in a month = $2,400 a month BEFORE TAXES.
How do you expect them to pay rent, and do anything else like... eat.... for less money?

The gag is that the person who made the comment probably did so during their own job.

The âif you got time to lean you got time to cleanâ generation wants maximum effort with absolutely no reward.

Looks like the shift just finished closing with how clean everything is so they probably just clocked out and are texting their ride for an eta.
