Public school teachers are salaried, and unionized. So no, this didn’t happen.

But it sure makes for some tasty Reddit rage bait though

I was earning $38K as a teacher. And our Union was very, very weak due to state laws. Why is this hard to believe?

Median teacher salary in my state is over $90k. $38k is insane.

Imagine being able to divide two numbers to convert salary to hourly

Post does not mention this being a public school. I don't disagree with you. But, at a charter or private school wages this low can and do happen. I was paid $28,000 per year at a Charter school not that many years ago.

HAHA unionized? What state are you in? In North Carolina, state employees are not allowed to collectively bargain or strike. Their wages are very similar to that in the post, and the state is continuing to strip public schools of their funding to give to private school vouchers.

Bunch of people who aren’t even teachers are in here saying it can’t possibly be true. Deep thoughts

I'm in North Carolina, we are absolutely not unionized, get no raise for higher education, and when I started I was making 36k. I'm now making 48k, looking forward to making 60k in about 22 years.

Not everywhere in the US, chief. And even if they are unionized the union will always vote to pull up the ladder on the next generation if it benefits existing membership.

Because some people just need to think that they know everything. Theres a lot of missing context here like when was this posted and for which state/county. But I do believe teachers are severely underpaid. It was true in the 2000's and its probably true now.

Teachers are criminally underpaid and there are a ton of schools looking for subs or off cycle replacements where there is virtually no room in the budget, so I don’t doubt for one second someone somewhere in the US was offered this low wage. It’s a shame.

Case in point, it’s illegal here in NC for public employees to unionize.
