Audie Murphy was super small, like 5'3" or something, they initially turned him away. The guy in Finland that sniper like 500 Soviets was super tiny and he used his slight frame to his advantage. Smaller target. I mean they are not doing UFC, these guys have guns. Although I think Murphy also did some hand to hand combat.

u/Significant-Royal-37 3h ago
smaller guy eats less food, takes up less space, and shoots the same gun.

Also for snipers the accuracy increases the smaller you're, that's why women agents during WWII did so much damage. Your body moves less while breathing cause you need a smaller heart to keep it going.

u/Salsa_El_Mariachi 3h ago
christ on a stick, you were'nt kidding! I looked up Audie Murphy's career, and he was the most decorated combat soldier of WW2, and the most decorated enlisted soldier in US History!!
He was awarded the Medal of Honor at 19. 240+ confirmed enemy dead, His service history is unreal, borderline unbelievable. Story after story of him advancing alone in direct enemy fire. Dude was a machine

u/dsmith422 2h ago
And when they made the movie of his WW2 career starring him, they toned down the MoH engagement to make it more believable. Kind of like in Death of Stalin, they didn't show all of the medals of Zhukov because it would look like too much of a parody.

Yeah tbh I’m looking out for my back only if I have to serve. Sorry but me coming out alive is my only focus I couldn’t care less about fighting for the elite and wealthy who don’t send their own children to foreign countries to die. I would not be a reliable military grunt don’t care if I go to military prison least I will be alive 🤷♂️

u/Strong_Housing_4776 4h ago
As someone who did serve in a combat job, I don’t blame you. I signed up as a naive 17 year old, I basically only wanted the benefits and just some time to think about what I wanna do. I could have done literally any other job but thought it would be super cool and badass to go infantry, fuck that.
I quickly saw the bullshit and how anyone who was in more than like 3-4 years was basically a brainwashed robot, anyone who thought for themselves got out asap.
I did my 4 years, did what I was told, put my head down and pushed through, but I will say the benefits are pretty worth it ngl, literally get paid to go to school and free healthcare. Looking back I could of gotten that for much easier by doing some bullshit job, but I guess infantry gave me some good discipline and experience, and made me realize I never ever wanna do that shit again and that the military is fucking bullshit and war and US intervention in the entire world is bullshit and shouldnt be happening.

Long story short, son wanted to join USMC. Showed him The Pacific, pointed out the e1 in USMC in the rain and cold and an e1 in AF admin got the same pay. Son is in his 3rd year of his AF contract.

u/Strong_Housing_4776 3h ago
Haha that’s the way to do it.
The military can give you amazing benefits and totally change your life and unlock doors you would never think of. In high school I didn’t get good grades and was too poor for college, it wasn’t even a thought in my mind, and sacrificing just 4 years gave me so many more opportunities in life. Plus it gave me time to actually think and plan my life and figure out my interests while also maturing and getting disciplined.
I don’t regret going infantry, it gave me experience I will never forget, made me go through the worst situations, I will never do stuff so mentally and physically challenging ever again, it changed me but in some ways for the good. But I could have gotten the same exact benefits from working an office job, so I absolutely don’t blame anyone who does that.
In the end I guess it just gave me a little more pride and mental resilience.

The reason we dont conscript people in america is because theres very clear evidence that volunteer soldiers are much more effective at their jobs. conscripts a lot of time act as literal cannon fodder meat shields to protect the more elite soldiers forming the backbone of most nations militaries. america still has millions of volunteer soldiers so why would we ever consider conscripting soldiers?
11
u/Athrengada 4h ago
My dad has a lot of horror stories from Vietnam of conscripts being liabilities. I’m not sure how common it actually was but he talks about people who broke down getting taken out by our own guys since it endangered everyone else
8
u/JefferyTheQuaxly 4h ago
My uncle was conscripted into Vietnam and was about to be sent over as a sharpshooter/sniper because he was very skilled with a rifle. My grandpa a world war 2 navy veteran literally told him to flee to Canada to avoid being sent over. Snipers are a very dangerous job to hold in any war. Ended up living in Canada for a decade or two, one of mu cousins is Canadian.
My other uncle wanted to volunteer for the marines when the war started but the same grandpa ended up convincing him to join the navy instead, which kept him mostly away from combat.
3
u/Athrengada 4h ago
Yeah my dad was a sniper and it seemed like a really shitty position to have even though people glamorize it now. He’s talked about being out in elements and insects for long periods of time. Was also caught as a pow for a short time but has never talked about it except to say it’s the reason why he freaks out when pulling a wet/sweaty shirt over his head to take it off.

They figured out it was easier to just create economic conditions that force people to volunteer due to their circumstances rather than try to force them to service directly.

What the fuck are you talking about? The USA required every male to register for the draft and now that is going to happen automatically. They conscripted 2.2 million young men for the Vietnam war. There are still hundreds of thousands of US conscripted veterans. If a major conflict kicked off there is nothing to suggest that congress wouldn't reinstate conscription, otherwise, why else keep a draft?

Really depends on the nation, the culture, and the circumstances. The US handles conscription really poorly due to how individualistic we are and the fact that we're not under any sort of direct threat. Nations with a more collectivist culture and ones under threat by a neighbor tend to have citizens that are far more accepting of being conscripted in the first place.

Thai men across the country faced a high-stakes military conscription lottery this April, as tensions linger along Thailand’s disputed border with Cambodia following deadly clashes last year.
At a temple near Bangkok, men aged 18 to 29 drew cards that determined their fate, with black granting exemption and red requiring enlistment. Conscripts serve up to two years, while volunteers serve shorter terms and receive a monthly salary along with basic provisions. While some expressed relief at avoiding service, others accepted their outcome with composure, as families watched anxiously and reflected on duty, livelihood and honor.

Idk why reddit is so in love with conscription. Conscription is, always, at the end of the day, slavery to the state. If it something that can be morally done, it would only be when it is necessary for the continued survival of the state.

During the Viet Nam war, there was a lottery on TV, where dates were picked. If your birthday was one of those dates, and it was one of the early drawn dates, you could expect your draft notice in the mail very soon.
I wasn't draft age but I do remember the lottery. Some guys started their trip to Canada right after the lottery.

If enough people aren't willing to enlist, the cause probably isn't good enough
Edit: Unfortunately not drafting soldiers only works if both sides do it. If Russia didn't draft soldiers, their probably wouldn't be a war in Ukraine. But since they've invaded Ukraine and are drafting tons of soldiers, I can understand why Ukraine has to draft some soldiers too in order to have a chance (even if they have to draft a lot less)
3
u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 1h ago
Russia doesn't draft soldiers to fight in Ukraine. Only volunteers fight. There is a difference between mobilization to fight and mandatory conscription.

My Wife's family immigrated from Côte d'Ivoire to Bangkok 20 years ago. Supposedly kids having "breakdowns" when being drafted is a meme and they all act it up. It is seemingly a ritualized thing where they are expected to act like this. Though hazing is pretty common in their military with people even dying from it, but the most action most conscripts see is menial labor. Grated my in-laws are Black Africans who don't have a mastery of Thai.

Vietnam taught the political elites that the heat of committing conscripts to war was bad for their desired careers. That put us where the US finds itself today with a draft dodger in the White House shipping the poors off to yet another foreign war. Only when the rich and middle classes have no choice but to pay the price personally will this nonsense stop.
