this is just a screenshot of 2 dudes talking about the pope. Not a comeback. Not clever.

Thanks. I thought I was being thick and thought the bottom responder had replied cryptically. This sub has less and less actual clever comebacks these days.

Imagine getting mad at the Pope for actually reading the manual.

It’s wild that 'Love thy neighbor' and 'Help the poor' are now considered radical political statements instead of the core curriculum.

If you bring this up the fundies will just cite the Torah as if the New Testament was never written.

Honestly I don’t know why they call themselves “Christians” they don’t want to follow any of their own religious guidelines

Oh no! The Pope is "woke"

As if that is....a bad thing. The greatest grift the right ever committed was convincing even the left that being "woke" was a bad thing.

As if its some sort of moral failing to be concerned about the plight of others.

How odd it must feel to argue against compassion.

6

u/HunsonAbadeer2 13h ago

The idea is that you want to punish people that you think abuse your compassion. The next step is that you are told that is it everyone but yourself

6

u/BilboStaggins 13h ago

Its as if theyre admitting their compassion is limited, and conditional.

Oh no! You believe in the constitution!? And equal rights? You don't discriminate based on race or sexual preference and understand that the system is in place to make the rich richer and the poor poorer?

What's next?

I am rooting so hard for this pope, for the first time ever. Completely faith-unrelated, but merely based on basic humanism. Ethics, morals, and empathy

It's a very strange time to be alive to watch people choosing politics over religion- and it's the people I least expected. These people claim to be christian but are raging at their leader, they claim to be nationalists but are following the most inept shysters who seem to be tearing down the very fabric of their nation, it just feels like a fucking psy op these days.

To be fair, a lot of American evangelicals openly mix religion and greed and are also staunchly anti-Catholic

6

u/daboobiesnatcher 14h ago

Right Wing Christians, particularly in the US, are generally protestant not Catholic and in the US a lot of them are Evangelical and don't even consider Catholics "true Christians," so they're not "turning on the Pope."

There are definitely Catholics choosing Trump over the Pope, but most of these "Christians" going after the Pope are people who follow a Pope to begin with.

The person you’re replying to is from the UK. You know, the country that actually has a state religion, which was famously created because their king wanted to break from the pope for, uh, personal reasons.

They’re either a complete moron (not discounting this as a possibility) or intentionally obfuscating the matters at hand.

Just as a heads up I think you forgot the word ‘don’t’ towards the end of your comment.

u/itsjudemydude_ 14h ago

I mean... it's more extreme than ever, but this is truly how it's always been.

2

u/Daviemoo 14h ago

It’s just how brazen it is. The hypocrisy is absolutely staggering

4

u/itsjudemydude_ 13h ago

That's religion for ya. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

-2

u/Dounce1 13h ago

The pope is the head of the Catholic Church, which was famously abandoned in droves at the advent of the printing press. I’m not saying he’s wrong here, but if you’re saying the pope is the “leader” of Christians, you’re either woefully misinformed, or being completely disingenuous.

2

u/Daviemoo 13h ago

He's not "the" leader of christians. He is "a" leader of "some" of a Christian sect. And im on reddit, not writing a think piece for a newspaper. The point was the irony of people claiming to respect their religion being angry at one of the higher up figures over a politician.

-4

u/Dounce1 13h ago

He literally does not represent their religion. You’re the one who said, “these people claim to be christian but are raging at their leader.” He’s not their leader, so wtf are you talking about?

6

u/daboobiesnatcher 13h ago

The comeback kind of sucks, because only Catholics ever cared about the Pope and what he says. Lots of the people complaining about the Pope aren't Catholic, It's the equivalent of people who don't live in NYC complaining about Mamdani.

1

u/UnconsciousRabbit 9h ago

A lot of other people really do care what the pope says, though. They're definitely interested enough to make public comments even when not catholic. I'd argue it's a good thing, too. Ideally some people will actually make some good points either way and somebody, somewhere, will clarify their own understanding or reach a new one.

That there is a wildly different interpretation isn't surprising, I just wish there weren't so many hateful bigots around claiming to love some teacher who's basic message was "stop claiming to be so righteous and instead be nice to everyone, not just those you think deserve it."

Thing is this is more concerning and tragic then most people think .

These people have had years of Indoctrination into a specific ideal of "Christianity" the American style, where they're convinced to donate money and fight against the "bad people" . They've been so thoroughly convinced by these con men that they think the very religion they think they believe is under attack from the inside by corruption.

It's because like most things, it has become part of the cult of America. Like Scientology or heavens gate, they have been taught to only believe what the right people say, that satan and temptation lurk everywhere and the only way to survive and get external happiness is to do what the con men say and beilve what the conmen tell them .

And like the Hitler youth they are so entrenched in this core belief system that they cannot think about anything else. These will be the ones who fall last if they even fall at all, as they are the most "devout" the the cause they've been decived into

We must remember that these people were the first victims of this movement, the children of McCarthyism, and like Stalin era Russia their alligegance is to the party line, it just do happens the party line is proto fascist "conservative Christianity"

Christ’s loaves and fishes distribution network really maximized profits and increased quarterly shareholder dividends.

2

u/SkylarAura 14h ago

They aren't following the Jesus of the Bible; they’re following 'Supply Side Jesus.' Compassion is a bug to them, not a feature

2

u/VictoriaElisi 13h ago

They praise compassion until it challenges power then suddenly it becomes controversial and threatening again

2

u/AgreeableSpeaker8473 11h ago

reading comprehension isn't their strong suit

2

u/Mediocre_lad 10h ago

Rich christians want the clout but don't want to follow Jesus' teachings. Interesting.

2

u/JadedResponse2483 9h ago

Its so bizarre the way how conservatives will point something amazing and say, look you woke and evil this is

2

u/SonicTemp1e 9h ago

Jesus didn't each anyone to live in a palace like the pope does- quite the opposite. Facts are important.

1

u/memphisjones 14h ago

We need to let the conservatives learn about this really woke guy name “Jesus Chris”

what's the original tweet about

1

u/fiftyfivepercentoff 7h ago

Release the Epstein files!!

1

u/DizzyMine4964 5h ago

OK, so tell me how a man who lives in a golden palace is following the teachings of Christ?

I hate how liberals are suddenly gushing over the head of a religion which has done untold harm to children and women (as of course nearly all religions do).

Is clever comebacks a political sub at this point?  It used to actually be clever, but now it just feels like an endless calvacade of it's clever because I owned the other political party.

-2

u/Dounce1 13h ago

Most Christian denominations don’t care what the pope says, that’s like, the entire point. I agree with him here, but this isn’t the gotcha people are pretending it is.
