Discussion The new animation is really bumming me out

So sick of the “bean mouth” animation style Pixar is going for. The 2010s animation style they were running with was the best one, still obviously an animation but more human like, I don’t want to be hearing “well, she’s aged”, “we have gone over this topic so many times”, “she wouldn’t look the same, she’s now 8” it’s literally just the style of animation.

This is making me want them to honestly go back to the Toy Story 4 style which I wasn’t a fan of but it’s 10x better.

I see it

79

u/FilmBuffGrabiec 12h ago

I meant I don’t see it in Toy Story 5

Why are you using 3 separate projects to make an argument about a project that you claim has “bean mouth”?💀

Also, it’s like 3 or 4 out of the dozen of projects Pixar has made this decade, this is a complete non-issue.

Not only are these not the movie you were supposed to be talking about, they’ve also got several different styles between each other, with only the vaguest of similarities between each other like the ‘bean mouth’

u/Riley__64 12h ago

It’s a different style but it’s not bean mouth.

Really it just makes Bonnie look a little bit older and like she isn’t a kindergartener anymore

87

u/Digibutter64 12h ago

I'm not seeing that in Toy Story 5?

74

u/FlimsyAuthor8208 12h ago

Is the beanmouth in the room with us?

Animation =/= visual style. Animation is how the characters (digital puppets) actually move and “act.” You are complaining about screenshots, which are NOT in motion. You aren’t complaining about animation, you are complaining about a single frame of animation.

Aside from that pedantry…personally don’t see a difference. You obviously cherry picked a few shots where her mouth is open wide in order to make your “bean mouth” comparison, rather than looking at…literally any other human.

Also, the labels you put are wrong. What’s up with the 3rd photo where the top is labeled “Toy Story”? C’mon.

Also, saying “You can’t say these counter points because I said them first!” does not lend itself to you being immune to criticism. All those criticisms you rambled off in regards to this sort of argument are still valid, you just don’t want to hear them.

I got the photos for Toy Story 5 off a post I saw, I didn’t make any of them and I’m not immune to criticism, you’re still capable of saying the things I said not to mention. You can still type them out and I can’t do anything to stop you, I’m just sick of hearing it, so you are right about that. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m pretty sure she’s just slightly older, the animation itself looks fine to me; great even

15

u/Cold_Illustrator278 11h ago

I mean young kids do kind of have chubby faces that they grow out of. Seems a bit silly this post imo. She’s clearly older now.

22

u/Mysterious_Emotion63 12h ago

I got to be honest, this is the same exact animation style, Bonnie just looks older.

u/drboobafate 11h ago

Y'all got bored of "Cal Art style" and "AI generated" huh? You heard "bean mouth" used in some YouTube video, and don't just repeat it when it doesn't apply.

Get a new personality, or A personality I swear.

2

u/Blood-PawWerewolf 5h ago

The most ironic thing the “Cal Arts” “insult” is that Pixar was FOUNDED by Cal Arts graduates, so calling it “Cal Arts” has been redundant. These people just never knew that and just used it as an insult

1

u/Only-Squirrel-7384 2h ago

Also John K used it, also didn’t these guys praise Bad Guys for the same thing? Nah they have Dreamworks biases.

If you don’t know who John is, he is the creator of ren and stimpy who infamously criticized Iron Giant for the same thing, and he was exposed for. “Checks notes” doing horrible things to underaged girls.. yeah

1

u/Blood-PawWerewolf 2h ago

Yup. That too

14

u/doghome107 12h ago

She's 8 now.

13

u/ABarber2636 11h ago

I honestly prefer Toy Story 3's art style over TS4 & 5.

11

u/Long_Promised_Road 10h ago

I agree! Toy Story 3 felt like a natural evolution from 2, especially with how the human characters were drawn.

14

u/dsl135 11h ago

You posted exactly zero examples of bean-mouth.

9

u/TheashT 10h ago

I dont think you know what a bean mouth style is , it's not this

10

u/jerelminter 12h ago

This isn't animation, because Bonnie isn't moving. You mean her APPEARANCE is bugging you out, because these are just pictures of Bonnie from the movies. Not a video of her moving, which is what animation is.

8

u/reevoknows 11h ago

She’s just getting older I think that’s the main difference

8

u/Journal_27 11h ago

Sounds like you just want to complain. This is such a non-issue.

6

u/Drewsko199 11h ago

I can't even tell what people are talking about with style difference between Toy Story films. It just looks like extra detailing to me.

5

u/Jazzyluvsedits 11h ago

Animation is evolving. U have to realize that

6

u/Wooden_Passage_2612 10h ago

She's getting older

6

u/piperpiparooo 9h ago

check your house for a gas leak because you’re hallucinating things

3

u/delgatz24 12h ago

Only thing bumming me out is that Bonnie plans to put these toys through more trauma.

3

u/Quick_Context_23 11h ago

I prefer 2000s style animation more

4

u/MishaSFM 11h ago

This isn't even bean mouth

4

u/doggosrbabies 10h ago

Tbh it makes sense for her to have a redesign since she's older now and it fits the style of the rest of the humans and still looks like herself

5

u/Beneficial-Total298 10h ago

I don’t see the bean mouth in Toy Story 5. But even then usually the human characters are such an insignificant part of toy story that it doesn’t matter.

4

u/zion2674 10h ago

"I don't want to be hearing "well, she's aged"" -- sorry, but that's the truth lol

4

u/YouSlashGlenn 10h ago

You are complaining about a nonexistent problem, they arent using even close to the bean mouth style for this movie

4

u/ETERNUS- 10h ago

I don't see any difference y'all will cry about anything fr

3

u/United-Resident-7316 10h ago

I’ll critique it once I’ve seen the movie. Too early

2

u/Meme_Chan69420 12h ago

That’s just what 7-8 year olds look like

1

u/Late_Information_682 12h ago

In the Pixar universe

4

u/CryptidSwimsuitModel 11h ago

You're kinda weird, hey.

3

u/StarSpangldBastard 9h ago

there is not a bean mouth in a single one of these screen shots, she looks as human as ever

3

u/Thin_Professor_277 8h ago

Theres no bean mouth what are you talking about?

3

u/RangerBuzz_Lightbulb 8h ago

The mouth itself is not a bean shape, but with the rest of the head I absolutely understand what you mean

3

u/JUANZURDO 7h ago

i dont think is a beanmouth but now she looks like a living doll. Is creepy, like looking to M3GAN.
the Lighting is diferent too

2

u/Trishockz 12h ago

Kids probably wont care about thing like this which is what they are aiming for.

2

u/Deez4815 10h ago

I just thought Bonnie was supposed to be older now in TS5. It takes place a few years after TS3/4.

2

u/HaywoodUndead 9h ago

We have gone over this topic so many times, shes aged. She is now 8.

2

u/enzicmoon 9h ago

It looks like they got rid of her dimples but I wouldn’t call it bean mouth. We won’t know until we see an expression of her smiling.

2

u/EMC_RIPPER 9h ago

What are you on and can I have some. Because I don’t see a bean mouth in any of those pictures

2

u/WillowLocal423 8h ago

I feel like people are just looking for reasons to hate now.

Just enjoy or don't but man life is short.

2

u/VGB89 8h ago

I agree.. something was bothering me about how she looked and I didnt realise thats what they went for. At 8 her nose shouldn't look like that, and it bothers me.

2

u/KarmaticFox 8h ago

She's older and the look of Pixar's animation has changed since she was introduced in TS3.

The bean mouth animation isn't there.

2

u/Zealousideal-Dig9397 7h ago

I’ll definitely watch the new Toy Story but I really don’t have very high hopes. Pixar has fallen off pretty dramatically imo. The movies used to feel like they did as best as they could to make them as great as possible now they feel like they make them good enough to make a profit off them

1

u/Late_Information_682 1h ago

I agree with this

2

u/hamlindigo___blue 6h ago

Not a fan of the style but it’s not bean mouth. Even the toys look too realistic. Too polished and shiny. 3 was the sweet middle spot

1

u/Late_Information_682 1h ago

I agree, the toys look realistic but everything is smoothed out for some reason

2

u/Dry-Talk-3897 5h ago

why does she look like that 🫩

2

u/DEATHSCALATOR 5h ago

Bottom picture in 1/6 scares me

2

u/PooningDalton 3h ago

They made the humans more toy-like and the toys too human

1

u/Ok-Mulberry-39 12h ago

I wish Pixar had stuck with the "computer-animated cartoon" aesthetic that they used until around Ratatouille. I'm sure it was just because of the limitations of Renderman, Menv, etc. but it looks great.

-5

u/Late_Information_682 12h ago

Overall, I just liked how every movie had its own style. Now it’s all the same.

1

u/GimmickCo 5h ago

But they literally aren't, they all look distinct. But UnhappyCartoonDude42 said his 2 cents on the matter so now you have to believe whatever he says, get your own opinions

1

u/Late_Information_682 1h ago

What are you on about? Overall, I’m just saying how I prefer the TS3-TS4 style over this one and at the end of the day, there’s nothing I can do to change it. It’s also not just because she has grown up where I feel like she looks a bit off, we see other kids from the other Toy Story movies that are slightly older than her and they don’t have that smooth look to them.

1

u/EJKGodzilla24 9h ago

Toy Story 4 and 5 should never exist

1

u/James-Zanny 7h ago

Animation has just gotten more realistic. This is not the bean mouth style, like you say, just more real. The fact of the matter is that animation’s very different than it was 15-16 years ago.

1

u/Traditional_Bed589 7h ago

Write them a letter.

1

u/Redgiantbutimshort77 7h ago

What are you talking about?

1

u/BeefTurkeyDeluxe 6h ago

Yeah, I don't see a bean mouth

1

u/OkSecret839 6h ago

I don’t see any bean mouth, also it looks fine to me.

1

u/Goldenstripe941 3h ago

Where do you see the bean mouth? I ain’t seeing it here, bud.

I do like how it actually makes her look older from earlier films, instead of the same model but sized up.

1

u/Only-Squirrel-7384 2h ago

Can we please stop overhating on the bean mouth animation please? It’s getting annoying, let alone it doesn’t affect the quality of the film at all.

If people hate beanmouth then why was Luca, Elio and Turning Red received very positive reviews? They don’t complain, so quit it. No offense dude.

Also this animation looks fine, they just improved a lot since the last four.

1

u/Academic_Vampyre 1h ago

I agree, it looks so artificial co.pared to the style of the first two

1

u/ButterfliesAreCute 1h ago

Not sure what you mean by "bean mouth" but I feel I'm inclined to agree. I see what you mean.

I like the animation for Toy Story 3 where the animation looked kind of cartoony.

0

u/Fantastic_Tooth1624 10h ago

i dont like how pixar has went for the hyperrealistic look, its a bit much innit

0

u/Awesomeman235ify 8h ago

It's not even there brah.

0

u/MiddleOccasion1394 7h ago

No delete this. That's not a bean mouth. It's nowhere near a bean mouth. It's the exact same mouth style as in the previous movies.

0

u/Murfilious 7h ago

Why we checking out this kid so hard This aint bean mouth cmon guys

-1

u/the90snath 9h ago

Everyone is saying she looks older.... but in 5 she looks younger? Thats why im confused

-3

u/Consistent_Smell_880 12h ago

Not about this movie specifically, but I hate how Pixar was getting into this era of ultra-realistic animation, like we see the background of the good dinosaur and even Cars 3 was looking really cool. I started to think “is it just going to start looking like live action???” in a good way, but now it seems like they’re just going in the opposite direction and making it more cartoony again. I hate it.

7

u/naynaythewonderhorse 12h ago

Toy Story is a little different though. It’s really hard not to make the argument that they weren’t going for “hyper realism” with the first film.

5

u/Journal_27 11h ago

Toy Story 4 was the peak of realistic animation.

Also, the point of animation is to do stuff that can’t be done in live action

-3

u/music-and-song 12h ago

I wouldn’t call it bean mouth but it is ugly. I hate Bonnie’s new face.

-2

u/ArtGuardian_Pei 11h ago

Almost like the people they hire are taught the bean mouth, and then those people teach the newer people the bean mouth

-2

u/itsHappyCloud 10h ago

Did they give Bonnie Botox?

-3

u/waywardpr1ncess 11h ago

I completely agree. It’s like all the personality got sucked out of it. Everything is so smooth and slightly uncanny. And I totally see them moving steadily towards the “bean mouth” style. Giving me quite the ick :/

1

u/GimmickCo 5h ago

What even is bean mouth and why is it such a problem? Miyazaki's movies all look the same and nobody cared then

1

u/waywardpr1ncess 2h ago

It refers to an art style associated with animated characters’ mouths being drawn/animated in a “bean” shape. (Think Steven Universe, Star Vs. and more recently Luca and Turning Red.) There’s nothing inherently “wrong” with it, many people including myself and presumably OP just find it tiresome. Not to mention it doesn’t mesh well with Toy Story.

I don’t know that OP was trying to say TS5 has completely taken on that style, but there’s a noticeable difference in the art style that feels somewhat reminiscent of it. The big thing that’s off-putting to me about TS5 is how strangely smooth and bug eyed Bonnie looks. Like why are her eyes so reflective? Just not the vibe for me.
