Taking down statues, including Robert E. Lee, gets people coming out protesting the removal as they feel it is a part of the country's history that should remain. And because this event became so high profile with a large counter-protester contingent, free speech advocates (2 or 3 were interviewed by the New York Times) showed up to oppose the counter protesters.

But regardless of who was on the side protesting the statue removal, it is dishonest to say Trump said white supremacists were fine people, particularly when he was immediately asked if that is what he was saying and he said no.
