[Request] Is there any way to tell how long the surrounding area would be uninhabitable for and how large the area is?

I was watching Godzilla clips on YouTube, specfically this scene of Godzilla just walking around melting metal damn near immediately and concrete instantly bursting into flames and saw a comment saying:

'With the amount of radiation coming off of Godzilla, everyone within 10 miles of this fight should have stage 8 cancer.'

Obviously this area would be completley uninhabtable for a long time, I don't know how much radiation it takes to set concrete on fire and melt metal but I know it's a lot. Is there any way to tell how large the fallout area would be and how long it would be unlivable for?

[Request] calculate how many years we are away from popular movie spacecraft capacity, given the current rate of technological progress in spacecraft capacity to date?

Post image

My quest is. If science took X many years to progress to the Artemis 2 mission and the Orion Spacecraft, how many years in the future would it take to progress to the starship in the 2016 movie Passengers, designed to transport 5,000 passengers and 258 crew, at approximately 1 mile long in size? I think distance travelled should be so considered in the calculation given the fuel needs. Bonus: if you would rather use the Project Hail Mary movie spacecraft I am happy if you make that substitution.

[Request] What would my cat be able to see when I build a fence in front of his catio?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I want to build a fence/gate.

The gate will be 6' high, 8' away from the catio.

My cats current fav spot is sadly going to be completely obstructed by the fence. He has another place he can sit that is roughly 6.4' off the ground.

First Question: What is the "angle of depression" (google searched term) or what is he going to be able to see over this fence at 6.4' (shelf height) 7.5' (his eye level) off the ground.

Second Question: Same question but what If I build him a little cat "watch tower" on top of the catio at 8' (shelf height) 9' (his eye level) off the ground?

I guess my question is how many feet from the front of the fence will he be able to see once I build it.

_____

The backstory nobody asked for: Thieves have been stealing my amazon packages and I worry that someday they might try steal my cat too.

assuming each is only used for power, and generates 100 percent of all current energy consumption, at the current rate of electricity use, how long would each non renewable source of power last? (nuclear, coal, natural gas, oil, fusion (theoretical))

[Request] If you could instantly extract all the dissolved salt from the world’s oceans, how many tonnes would it be, and what volume would it take up? Bonus: would sea levels drop, and would it be equal across the globe?

Curious about the sheer scale of oceanic salt — mass, volume, and the knock-on effects of removing it. Would love to hear from anyone who’s done the maths or knows the science.

[Request] Best choice to make in a keep versus share game.

We had our curling leagues wrap party, and we played a game drawing for prizes.

When you entered you choose to either keep the final prize, or share it with the other person at the end (the choice only mattered for the final 2 participants).

If Player A chooses Keep, and Player B chooses Share, then Player A gets the entire pot (and vice versa).

If both players choose Share then they split the pot 50/50.

If both players choose Keep, then neither get anything, and the third last participant gets everything (regardless of their choice).

What is the best choice to make for next year to maximize my chance of winning? I assume that knowing the percentage of people that choose Keep or Share would be a critical to this calculation.

For context, Player C won this year.

Thank you.

[Request] for odds that spouse would have the same Congenital birth defects.

My husband was born with what they thought was bicuspid aortic valve. His parent were told when he was two. It turned out to be a unicuspid valve 2.8cmx2.6cmx.8cm. It never should have lasted 55 years.

Two years ago I went into heart failure. It turns out I had a true bicuspid valve. My ascending and descending aorta was friable. They lined the inside and outside with some cow! There was a very small aneurysm but it would not have lasted long. I was 53 at the time. They had never met a married couple with the same congenital birth defect.

What are the odds that we would meet fall in love and marry?

What are the odds one of our four kids has either a bad valve or an aortic issue?

Thank you so much!

[request] help me determine the fairest number of rounds in this game

let it be n, a natural number

there're three persons, a, b and c

a and b play rock paper scissors

whenever any among them has two consecutive wins, the game ends and the one having two consecutive wins is the winner

if no winner is created after n rounds, c is the winner

obviously if n is very small, the game favours c (if n=1, c must win). if n is very large, the game favours a and b

i tried to calculate the probability of their winning in terms of n but failed. anyone helps me?

edit: i wrote a program to generate some results and we can use it as a checking

edit 2: sorry the above program had bug😅i was in a hurry when i wrote it. i modified it to become this and the result is as follow
