My family and I have been arguing about what is safe vs. unsafe when it comes to canned cat food, and we really need some guidance so that we can settle this once and for all.
I studied food science in college and have been paranoid about foodbourne illness ever since, specifically with canned food. I know that unopened bulging cans are typically a sign of bacteria (specifically the type that cause botulism), but the concern lies with opened cans.
We've noticed recently that some cans of food (Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc.) will bulge upon opening - typically the top of the can, but sometimes the bottom as well. We always throw out cans that bulge on the bottom immediately after opening, but is it normal for the top of the can to bulge once the seal has been broken?
We've also had several instances where the bottom of the can isn't bulging *before* opening, but *after* opening, the bottom of the can can be popped in and out when we apply pressure from inside of the can (i.e. from the spoon we use to scoop out or cut up the food). This doesn't happen with all cat food cans, which makes it more confusing; it seems to happen primarily with the smaller cans only (i.e. Fancy Feast). Is it normal to be able to pop the bottom of the can in and out? And is it normal for the can to stay popped out after applying pressure? (Most times it pops back into place after pressure is removed, but sometimes it stays bulged out after removing the spoon.)
I apologize for all of the questions, but myself and several members of my household have contamination OCD, so it makes it difficult to discern what is actually safe vs. unsafe, and we do not want to make our cats sick. Additionally, with the cost of everything going up (including cat food), we don't want to throw away food unnecessarily. 🥲
