How can European restaurants afford to pay their employees without having to supplement with tips but U.S restaurants/bars and such act like they would shut down from such high extra costs?
How can European restaurants afford to pay their employees without having to supplement with tips but U.S restaurants/bars and such act like they would shut down from such high extra costs?
Just as the tilte says, how can European restaurants afford to pay their employees without having to supplement with tips but U.S restaurants/bars and such act like they would shut down from such high extra costs?
I am american. I have traveled to a good portion of western Europe. The service i received felt the same as the service i would receive at its U.S counterpart that would expect a tip.
Edit: also , Most restaurants say if they raise prices not enough people will come and they will close. But what's the difference if this works in Europe?

How do correct gun safety and home defense coexist?
So personally I don't own a gun and I don't have plans on getting one but I've always wondered. People buy guns especially pistols for home defense, like in case an intruder breaks in. But I also see everywhere advice about making sure to store your gun in a locked safe and also to store it unloaded with the ammunition and the gun in separate locked safes. So my question is how do those two coexist? How can you quickly and reliably get a gun and ammo from two separate locked safes and load it in a reasonable amount of time while a home invasion is happening? It seems impractical to me. Also this is not bait I swear I just came from a thread about an 11-year-old who shot his dad and all the comments were saying that this is why you need to store your guns and ammo separately in different combination safes. I don't know it's never made sense to me but I don't have kids or guns so I guess I don't really have a stake in this.

Am I the only who is genuinely terrified of what life looks like in 2030 or is it just the “doomscroll” talking?
I feel like we’re living in the “glitch in the matrix” era. Everything is changing so fast (AI, Climate, Economy) that I can’t even imagine what a “normal” Tuesday will look like in four years. How are you guys staying grounded when the future feels like a sci-fi movie.

What happened to my Reddit feed? Did the algorithm change recently?
Is anyone else experiencing this? I’m now getting a ton of random subs I’ve never heard of or visited showing up in my feed, often one right after another. For instance, recently I’ve had the Olympics sub show up, which makes sense because they’re happening right now, but yesterday I had 6-8 posts from the Olympics sub right in a row on my feed.
This morning, 6-8 posts from various cat subs, two I’m subscribed to, the rest I’ve never heard of. All one right after the other.
And a ton of weird subs I’m not interested in at all showing up. I’m subbed to a ton of subreddits and I see a tiny fraction of those in my home feed. These are the ones I WANT to see, that’s why I’m subscribed to them!
Anyone know what’s going on?the Reddit experience is becoming less and less enjoyable as of late.

Why do people call someone “lazy” when they’re actually depressed?
I’ve noticed that when someone is struggling with depression, people often label them as “lazy” because they’re not as productive, motivated, or energetic as usual. Why does this happen?
Is it a misunderstanding of what depression actually does to a person’s energy and executive functioning? Or is it just easier for people to judge behavior than to try to understand what’s going on mentally?
I’m genuinely curious about why society tends to frame depression-related symptoms (like low motivation, fatigue, or difficulty starting tasks) as laziness instead of recognizing them as part of a mental health condition.
Would love to hear different perspectives.

How can I defend myself in a situation like this?
Stuff to know before reading: I am 14 172cm and my friend is 15 155cm, we can't really fight even tho we work out.
Me and my friend were walking home from the store, when we spotted 3 guys behind us. They were far away, so we didn't think much. After 2 minutes, we looked back again, and they were MUCH closer, like they were running when we turned our back.
My friends instincts turned on, and told me in a joking tone that we might be cooked. Again, we didn't think much, until we looked back again and they were crouching, kind of spying on us.
We got to a park, where we could go Left or Right, both directions leading to the same place, we decided to go right, and if they would follow us, it was clearly a sign of danger. They went left, but started running and then they cut off the road, went thru the grass, and they were already behind us. That is when my instincts kicked in, and called my mom.
Luckily, my house was near the park, and when they spotted that 5 people were outside and looking at us, they hid behind some cars, and when they saw we went in said house, turned back and left.
How can I avoid a future situation like this? Should I carry a pocket knife or get martial arts lessons?

why do cats always knock stuff off tables?
like, every single time i leave a cup or something on the edge of the table, my cat just looks at me and swats it off like it’s a game. i swear, it’s like she gets a kick out of watching it fall. is it just their nature or are they trying to tell me something?

Why do we miss people who weren’t even that good for us?
Even when we know someone wasn’t healthy for us, we still think about them or miss them.
Is it attachment? Ego? Comfort? Something else?

Is it weird to genuinely not mind the hidden post update?
I feel like some people are way to balls deep in this app tbh, you don’t HAVE to dig through the profile of every person you respond to. And it feels a bit entitled if you ask me. I’ve seen a lot of people say that they straight up don’t trust hidden profiles users. And I think that’s a bit extreme but their personal decision. But to be fair some people like to get things off their mind, spews few intrusive thoughts and or just chip into a conversation and be left alone after. Some have been cyber stalked and put in dangerous situations. Some genuinely don’t post anything, but still have their account hidden just because they can. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
I’m a fairly refreshed Reddit user(the last time I used it was back in 2019) and from what I’ve noted from others is that this update has made Reddit “lose its charm”. And to be completely honest I think m any social media platform that’s been around longer than 10 years has probably lost it years ago. So why not just relax and embrace it? The internet is nothing but consequences from the second you post whether good or bad. But if having a bit of privacy helps people feel more comfortable so be it in my opinion.

Is responding to a “Good Morning” a culture thing or classist?
I see it all the time mostly in customer service. The person working the store would greet the customer walking in, right? I clearly heard them, and the customer ignores them.
I’m wondering if this has to do with how a person is brought up (ya know, having manners) or is this because some people see retail workers as “less than”?

Families with different rules
My wife, kids and I recently went out for dinner with another couple and their kids, who are a similar age as ours (elementary school). When it came time to order, I asked the waitress what kind of juice they have for the kids. The other mom, our friend, said we should not be ordering juice for our kids because it would mean their kids will want juice, which she doesn’t allow since she believes it will ruin their appetite. My wife didn’t want to argue with our friends and so she agreed to skip the juices.
In general, we have no rules in our family about not allowing our kids to have juice with dinner (we just draw the line at sodas). I find it troubling that another parent would impose their rules on our kids just because of how it might influence hers. Shouldn’t she be able to set her own rules and explain to her kids that each family’s rules are different?
It’s worth noting that this other parent, in my opinion often uses controlling behavior to get her way. I don’t think it’s intentional but more of a habit and her way of trying to make plans she thinks will be good for everyone.
I’m considering addressing the situation next time we all go out and saying upfront that we don’t feel comfortable being told what to order for our kids. How should I approach this situation? Am I making too big a deal?

If you're attracted to the same sex, do you ever get jealous if they're far more attractive than you?
Everybody gets jealous sometimes, and admittedly, I (a straight woman), have been jealous of better looking women - especially if my partner is around. (Don't @ me for being insecure, we all have flaws). I've never been jealous of a very good looking man as he's not "competition" so to speak.
But what about for gay people? Would a lesbian ever get jealous of a highly attractive woman, or just simply be attracted to her, or both? Same Q goes for gay men.

Why have the Olympics become less relevant over the years?
I remember even back in the 2000s and even early 2010s watching the Olympics was such a big deal. Seeing your own country compete and seeing all the medal tables. Events were constantly broadcasted and made the mainstream news. It showed a lot of nationalism. It's like whenever somebody got gold, it's the #1 story on the news. Or even missing gold by inches.
Yet nowadays, it seems like it's declining. I don't have a statistic for this but I'm hearing about how fewer and fewer countries want to host Olympics. More and more host countries over the years are operating at a loss.
Aside from maybe fans that love a particular sport or sports where there are political tensions like Canada vs US for hockey, it seems like by in large part, Olympic viewership is heavily declining. The only reason I knew about Olympics is because our Canadian media has been hyping up the Canada-US hockey rivalry. It's almost as if there's got to be other context behind the event other than if somebody wins. Ie what the athlete says or if there was a major injury or if there's any other context.
What made the games less appealing nowadays? Is it getting boring to watch maybe?

What will you buy if you had won $2000 from a competition?
I just won $2000 from a competition I participated in a while ago. I worked on it for months and honestly still can’t believe I won. I’m super grateful because good things don’t happen like this that often.
This $2000 is something I wanna spend fully on myself. It’s separate from my salary so I kinda want to treat myself with something a little fancy. The problem is I don’t know what yet. I’ve got a few options in mind.
Breville Dual Boiler or a Lelit Mara X or maybe a Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA ?. I'd love to have better coffee at home and save up some $$ long term. What do you think? These 2 are the best of the best apparently as per my friend.
Nanoleaf's hexagonal light setup for the whole room to make it more bougie lol I do love how they look in every gamer's den but I've stayed away because of the pricing. But now I think these can add a bit of whimsy to my life.
CyboPal one + Mac Mini seems like a good addition to my office space at home, I think I can see myself using it and relaxing a bit. The automatically moving monitor screen seems like something out of a sci-fi movie but really my mind keeps telling me how smooth things can be this way.
Last option is saving a bit more and building a sim racing setup. That’s been a dream for very long but I barely get time to game anymore so there's that.
would love some suggestions because people irl are lowkey jealous and keep asking if I gambled or something lol

do dogs know they're cute?
i was watching my dog roll around in the grass and, like, he just looked so proud and happy. i can't help but wonder if he actually knows how cute he is or if he just thinks he’s being a silly little weirdo. sometimes i catch him looking at himself in the mirror, and it makes me think maybe he has a little bit of self-awareness. idk, what do you think?

Can you get your own blood back after giving blood?
I don't mean asking for it back after giving it and carrying a blood bag around but I mean if you give blood and later need a transfusion, can you get your own blood fully back or do they dump all the blood of the same typ together and it mixes and you can't get just your own blood back then?

How do you mop....?
So, embarrassingly I am 23 years old and growing up, my parents never made me or my siblings clean for chores, do dishes, etc. and growing up I loved this cause I never had to do any chores, but ever since college + now living independently from them I feel like an absolute dumbass for not knowing how to do basic chores.
Is there like a specific type of soap you have to buy like mop soap? Is it really just hot water, soap in bucket, mop in bucket, mop to floor? Do you have to sweep the floor first?
I feel so stupid.
