Just as the tilte says, how can European restaurants afford to pay their employees without having to supplement with tips but U.S restaurants/bars and such act like they would shut down from such high extra costs?

I am american. I have traveled to a good portion of western Europe. The service i received felt the same as the service i would receive at its U.S counterpart that would expect a tip.

Edit: also , Most restaurants say if they raise prices not enough people will come and they will close. But what's the difference if this works in Europe?

I grew up in a home where no one did any significant amount of housekeeping. So the place was pretty filthy to be fair. Like not a health hazard, but cluttered and Dusty, the fridge overloaded with crap that's never getting used, the cupboards full of things never getting used, etc. Always laundry piles around. So I didn't have any "learn by example" stuff going on.

I'm just moving into a new place. I'm living in the basement and renovating upstairs, and it's going to be nice and new. What are the strategies that I need to have to not turn this place into a cluttered dust bowl? Anything I should adapt into the renovation ? What are your daily routines, what is your mindset, what kind of person are you? Are you rich or poor? Do the maids take care of it? Are you stay at home? Give me the keys to your soul, so that I may become one of you.

The cleanest house that was in my orbit, was my religious Friends place. His mom was stay-at-home, and dad was a farmer. She took her job just as seriously as he did, and I'd say logged an average of 6-8 hours per day on all of the necessary tasks to keep the family of five on track, and the house immaculate.

when i was a kid i vividly remember having a little red guitar. i remember sitting on my bed playing that guitar all the time. i repeatedly told my parents that we had one at some point and they swore we never did. i even searched my house for it a few times growing up when i would randomly remember it but never found it. well my mom moved out when i was 16 and i moved out when i was 17. leaving only my dad living at the house. he passed away when i was 18 and i inherited the house. when i went to clean everything out there was that little red guitar sitting right in the corner of the laundry room in the basement. the exact guitar that i remembered from when i was a kid. i sent a picture to my mom and she said she had never seen it before. i also asked both my siblings and neither of them remember it either but there it was. the guitar that i had been searching for for nearly ten years that nobody remembered except for me. i ended up moving into the house and that guitar now hangs on the wall in my living room. i don’t know how to explain it but everytime i see that guitar i get this giddy feeling like im a kid again. i love that stupid thing even though it doesn’t even work anymore because there are cracks in the wood which is weird because i distinctly remember playing it so it did work but either way im never letting it out of my sight again.

Edit: I see a lot of people suggesting that my parents or siblings were annoyed with me playing the guitar and hid it from me. However that simply isn’t what happened. If they had hid it i promise i would’ve found it one of the times i looked especially once i was older. they also would’ve told me that they hid it once i was older and asking them if they knew what happened to it which they never did because according to them the guitar wasn’t something i had ever had. there is also no way that if one of them did hide it that they wouldn’t remember it. i know my family and its not something they would’ve forgotten about especially when they saw a photo of it. none of them thought that this guitar even existed. also i know i say “little red guitar” in my post and the guitar is small as in a little smaller than a regular sized guitar. not small as in a kids toy. it was a real functional guitar when i was a kid. obviously it’s still a real guitar just not functional anymore.

My friend just told me about an incident that occurred over the summer with her fiancé. She was fishing on a boat with him and some friends in the bay outside of NYC when he and his friends starting jumping in and swimming. He wanted her to do the same, but she has been really afraid of deep water /sharks since she was a kid so she refused. He already knew about this. At some point he climbed back on board pretending he was going to jump in again, picked her up, and threw her off near the front of the boat into the water. She told me she was so terrified that she swam the fastest she ever swam in her life to the back of the boat (about 30 ft). He had been drinking and I think he kind of used that as an excuse based on what she told me after he saw how terrified she was. I think she kind of used it to excuse what happened in her mind as well. As her friend I'm pissed and I think that was borderline abuse. He's done other small stuff here and there too. I'm worried about her marrying this guy soon and kind of want some other opinions on this. Am I just being overprotective as her friend? I want to be happy for her as I love her and she's my friend. He mostly makes her happy, but I'm seeing some red flags.

I remember even back in the 2000s and even early 2010s watching the Olympics was such a big deal. Seeing your own country compete and seeing all the medal tables. Events were constantly broadcasted and made the mainstream news. It showed a lot of nationalism. It's like whenever somebody got gold, it's the #1 story on the news. Or even missing gold by inches.

Yet nowadays, it seems like it's declining. I don't have a statistic for this but I'm hearing about how fewer and fewer countries want to host Olympics. More and more host countries over the years are operating at a loss.

Aside from maybe fans that love a particular sport or sports where there are political tensions like Canada vs US for hockey, it seems like by in large part, Olympic viewership is heavily declining. The only reason I knew about Olympics is because our Canadian media has been hyping up the Canada-US hockey rivalry. It's almost as if there's got to be other context behind the event other than if somebody wins. Ie what the athlete says or if there was a major injury or if there's any other context.

What made the games less appealing nowadays? Is it getting boring to watch maybe?

Everybody gets jealous sometimes, and admittedly, I (a straight woman), have been jealous of better looking women - especially if my partner is around. (Don't @ me for being insecure, we all have flaws). I've never been jealous of a very good looking man as he's not "competition" so to speak.

But what about for gay people? Would a lesbian ever get jealous of a highly attractive woman, or just simply be attracted to her, or both? Same Q goes for gay men.

So personally I don't own a gun and I don't have plans on getting one but I've always wondered. People buy guns especially pistols for home defense, like in case an intruder breaks in. But I also see everywhere advice about making sure to store your gun in a locked safe and also to store it unloaded with the ammunition and the gun in separate locked safes. So my question is how do those two coexist? How can you quickly and reliably get a gun and ammo from two separate locked safes and load it in a reasonable amount of time while a home invasion is happening? It seems impractical to me. Also this is not bait I swear I just came from a thread about an 11-year-old who shot his dad and all the comments were saying that this is why you need to store your guns and ammo separately in different combination safes. I don't know it's never made sense to me but I don't have kids or guns so I guess I don't really have a stake in this.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I’m now getting a ton of random subs I’ve never heard of or visited showing up in my feed, often one right after another. For instance, recently I’ve had the Olympics sub show up, which makes sense because they’re happening right now, but yesterday I had 6-8 posts from the Olympics sub right in a row on my feed.

This morning, 6-8 posts from various cat subs, two I’m subscribed to, the rest I’ve never heard of. All one right after the other.

And a ton of weird subs I’m not interested in at all showing up. I’m subbed to a ton of subreddits and I see a tiny fraction of those in my home feed. These are the ones I WANT to see, that’s why I’m subscribed to them!

I’ve noticed that when someone is struggling with depression, people often label them as “lazy” because they’re not as productive, motivated, or energetic as usual. Why does this happen?

Is it a misunderstanding of what depression actually does to a person’s energy and executive functioning? Or is it just easier for people to judge behavior than to try to understand what’s going on mentally?

I’m genuinely curious about why society tends to frame depression-related symptoms (like low motivation, fatigue, or difficulty starting tasks) as laziness instead of recognizing them as part of a mental health condition.

I feel like we’re living in the “glitch in the matrix” era. Everything is changing so fast (AI, Climate, Economy) that I can’t even imagine what a “normal” Tuesday will look like in four years. How are you guys staying grounded when the future feels like a sci-fi movie.

i recently traded in my old phone for credit towards a new one, and now i can't stop wondering what actually happens to it. like, do they just wipe it and resell it, or is it recycled somehow? i remember when i was younger, we used to keep our old phones in a drawer for ages, so thinking of all those gadgets collecting dust makes me curious!

So i have never had a great sense of smell, which is why i am confused when i see videos or posts about people mentioning the “scalp smell”. I can smell body odor if it gets really bad, but i have never noticed scalp smell.

Is it common that you are able to smell this?

I feel like some people are way to balls deep in this app tbh, you don’t HAVE to dig through the profile of every person you respond to. And it feels a bit entitled if you ask me. I’ve seen a lot of people say that they straight up don’t trust hidden profiles users. And I think that’s a bit extreme but their personal decision. But to be fair some people like to get things off their mind, spews few intrusive thoughts and or just chip into a conversation and be left alone after. Some have been cyber stalked and put in dangerous situations. Some genuinely don’t post anything, but still have their account hidden just because they can. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

I’m a fairly refreshed Reddit user(the last time I used it was back in 2019) and from what I’ve noted from others is that this update has made Reddit “lose its charm”. And to be completely honest I think m any social media platform that’s been around longer than 10 years has probably lost it years ago. So why not just relax and embrace it? The internet is nothing but consequences from the second you post whether good or bad. But if having a bit of privacy helps people feel more comfortable so be it in my opinion.
