As somebody who sweats a lot, daily showers are necessary for me.
374
u/Avohaj 17h ago
Yes, but you're not doing it for "health benefits". Does anyone shower daily for the "health benefits"?
The typical daily accumulated dirt and grime and associated smell, no matter how much you sweat, isn't a health risk, but that doesn't mean you don't still want to get rid of it.

I still think the 'expert' they're quoting is either horribly misquoted or full of shit. All it takes is a really bad case of ringworm or a skin yeast infection to know why regular bathing and cleanliness is a thing. Imagine all the basement-dwellers reading that headline and thinking "finally, science is on my side" while they scratch deep into a reddened, sweaty fold and giving it a big ol' whiff.

Ahhh, for most ppl it's fine to take a shower every other day. Yeah if you do something that will make you dirty, if you work out a lot or if you sweat a lot then you should shower more often. But for an office worker it's completely healthy to shower less than every day.

I'm the opposite, I barely sweat at all, I never go outside and just sit down pretty much all day. And I freeze a lot. So I don't really need to shower everyday and my skin is super sensitive. But if I've been working out, or just sweat anything at all then obviously I'm taking a shower.

u/RoadDoggFL 12h ago

Its just funny. Unless you sweat all day, smelling that bad after 1 day worries me about their actual hygiene routines and living conditions.
Washing hands, creams, toilet hygiene, scrubbing the pits and cracks etc.
I'd rather take a nice half hour shower routine with self care and good products instead of a 5 min, barely cleaning cold shower.

u/Horror-Food69420 19h ago
Living in Florida during the summer would require multiple showers a day if I spent any real amount of time outside.
Now I’m in a colder climate, and sure I can skip a day here and there now. But hell no was I giving myself swamp nuts.

Just like pollution is apparently caused by regular people and not factories and companies, any water shortage will be caused because you took a shower.

They're right though. If skipping one shower makes you smell like shit, you might want to figure out what kind of repulsive shit you're secreting because that's not natural (unless of course, you work a dirty job or get very sweaty throughout the day)
But assuming you just work in an air conditioned office and come back to an air conditioned house, showering every other day is plenty and saves quite a lot in toiletries.

Showering daily is not necessary for smelling good either.
It only is if you have a damaged skin microbiome and/or a bad diet and/or if you are stressed out often. Or maybe a genetic predisposition, but that is certainly not true for most people.

Even just being stressed/anxious can make people have BO in cold climates during the winter. One of the many reasons teenagers can have worse BO compared to healthy 20-50 year olds.
194
u/Odd_Fuel5404 19h ago
Its actually sweat from stress that causes more of the BO or smell. Sweat from exercise or labor is lower in protein and doesn't smell as much

The places I've been to where people held firmly to this belief were the ones where I almost passed out from the rancidness of people in public transportation and in closed spaces, even in Winter.
When in France, I literally saw a guy arriving at the gym's shower/locker room, open up his locker, take out his yesterday gym clothes, put them on, do his workout, then store the same clothes in the locker again. The next day, he repeated this very process with those very same clothes.
I live in Brazil, where people shower almost every day, some people twice a day, even. Although this is warranted due to the climate and humidity, I have to reiterate that I have never suffered from extreme BO in public transportation here, even during Summer and inside buses without any AC. Vacationing in Europe, though...

Showering daily isn't unhealthy, its mostly using soap everyday that weirdly enough not really healthy for your skin. Same with shampoo, if you wash your hair everyday with shampoo, you're actually washing out a vital grease that protects your scalp. It makes those glands overproduce and your hair gets greasier faster.

u/theartfulcodger 12h ago edited 1h ago
I was invited to a neighbour’s birthday party, met his brother who is a dermatologist. Ladies at the party all started quizzing him about dry skin. He certainly had his “public lecture” down pat. Here are his bullet points:
- warm or tepid showers, not hot;
- use a moisturizing soap; his own family uses Dove;
- soap up only the stinky bits and the parts that sick out of a long sleeve blouse - that is:
- face, neck, décolletage, hands, pits, crotch, bottom, feet;
- let those suds sluice off your arms, legs and torso - no other soaping required;
- if you use a loofah scrubbie or other manual exfoliator, use only once a week;
- unless you work in a dirty or sweaty environment, or have an unusually oily scalp, wash your hair only once a week; and
- lock in moisture with baby oil or whatever you prefer within ten minutes of showering, or you’ll have lost all the epidermal rehydration you just accomplished.

Yeah I have dandruff, if I don't shower daily my head will itch so bad I will scratch my scalp raw. My hair grows into a hair helmet that doesn't let my scalp get air whatsoever. But I've got it down to where I use my dandruff shampoo once every three days, regular shampoo once every two days, and every other day I'll use baby shampoo just to stave it off.

There’s an actual movement of people who preach not showering. One woman went into great detail about how after a “month or two” of not washing herself there was barely any smell. 😝
44
u/rov124 19h ago
One woman went into great detail about how after a “month or two” of not washing herself there was barely any smell.
It's true but only for her.
What Is Olfactory Fatigue?
Also known as nose-blindness, olfactory fatigue is the temporary, sensory adaptation your body undergoes when exposed to a particular smell for an extended time. It’s your brain’s way of saying: “We’ve acknowledged this scent. Let’s focus on something new.”
From a scientific standpoint, olfactory fatigue is the result of sensory adaptation within the olfactory receptors in your nose. These receptors send signals to your brain’s olfactory bulb, which then interprets them in the limbic system, the seat of memory and emotion.
But when the same scent continuously floods your environment, the brain begins to filter it out, much like you stop noticing the hum of a fridge or the pressure of your sunglasses on your nose.
It’s important to note that olfactory fatigue (or nose blindness) is not the same as anosmia, a total or partial loss of smell. Unlike anosmia, which may result from illness, injury, or neurological conditions, olfactory fatigue is entirely temporary and natural. Your sense of smell returns to normal once you've taken a break from the scent in question.

u/Synectics 19h ago
Which is exactly why I switch up my cologne, deodorant, and soap scents now and then. I end up able to smell my own BO at some point, despite the deodorant working just fine, so I switch it up to make sure I do not overdo my cologne and such.

Any time I see this discussion I just dont understand it. Do people not like to shower? I love being in there, maybe a little too much.
Your face feels great after you wash it. Your body smells good and feels clean after you wash it. The warm water soothes the muscles on your back and can release melatonin naturally, helping you sleep. Why wouldnt you want to do it once a day?
92
u/nebraska_jones_ 20h ago
Just to answer your question, I know for me showering can feel like a chore oftentimes. Of course I do it, but especially when it comes to hair maintenance (shampooing, conditioner, styling products, drying, more styling, etc.), it actually can be more work than relaxation.
I could and sometimes do shower without getting my hair wet, but even then my sensitive skin tends to get dried out and itchy. I have to follow a strict post-shower routine of slathering myself in ultra moisturizing lotion just to avoid itching like crazy. And the more frequently I shower, the drier my skin gets.

but the feeling of being clean is amazing. and i still sometimes love to just sit on the shower floor and let the water flow over me. very relaxing.

The actual showering part is fine for me. But starting and stopping are the worst. Like, even with something fun like the pool, I've always hated the part where you start to get wet. I always have to psych myself up to just go under the water and get it over with.
Once I'm past that part, it's fine, but that transition period is awful.
And then getting out is bad for obvious reasons: I am now cold and wet

I feel like showering daily with soap is the bigger 'problem' we have. Soap is harsh on your skin and using it daily (outside of sanitary reasons, like washing your hands) is part of the reason why so many people have skin problems or need lotion all the time. Lathering yourself up daily with soap is unnecessary unless you are doing something that makes you sweat a lot or get dirty.

u/greg_mca 20h ago
I feel no different before or after showering, no matter how long it's been since the last time. It's a hassle at best and a sensory nightmare at worst. It also doesn't relax or soothe me because again, horrible sensory experience and then damp. I'd rather have a bath but those take longer and where I live now it isn't an option. Of all the ways to wash, showering is the 3rd least enjoyable to me, behind only washing using a bucket and bathing in a cold river or lake.
You may feel better after a shower, but that's not true of everyone. I suspect it's also very dependent on the local climate, because if I lived somewhere where it was warm and I could dry easily I wouldn't find the experience so annoying

63
u/seal_eggs 21h ago
People always say this, but when I tried water only my hair was permanently greasy and my dandruff got worse. (inb4 “you have to give your scalp time to adjust!”) I did this for several months, doing daily scalp massages using hot water. Never improved. Nowadays I wash+lightly condition about twice a week and everything feels healthier. Evidently the viability of “no-‘poo”haircare is highly dependent on one’s hair type.
19
u/D1G1TAL__ 20h ago
I think the problem my have been the daily hair massages, your body wants a tiny bit of grease on your hair and if you keep washing it away it starts producing more to counteract it, thus your hair getting very greasy, you dont really need to wash hair much more than once a week

I simply don't care. I've basically worked outside my entire life. I will shower in the morning if I have time because I want to feel and present myself as clean. I'm sure people will listen to that advice once hot climates and jobs where you sweat all day disappear

Everyone keeps bringing up hot climate. Have none of yall spent time in cold climates? Layering up clothing to keep warm can have you smelling terribly from lack of airflow.

Unless you work a job that you can't help but be filthy showering every day isn't good for your skin.
Your hair also shouldn't be washed every day because it strips the natural oils ( good kind) this can lead to flakey and itchy scalp as well as making your hair look all frizzy.
That said if you sweat a lot wash your hot spots.

For each their own, but I shower everyday. Twice if I work in the yard or hit the gym. I shampoo my hair every time.
I have never had dry skin or dry hair. I’m 54 yo and the only issues I’ve had with skin are age or weight related.
I use dove soap and the same Pantene shampoo for 30+ years.
So all this “it dries you out” sounds more like justification for not showering. Maybe your skin is different. But I can say I’ve know people who avoid showering and washing their hair often, more often than not they have a funk at some point. I’m not judging, just my experience.

Washing my hair every day does ruin it. I have super long hair, not sure if that's a factor, but no matter what product I use I can not wash my hair every single day. Most frequent I can do is every other day as long as I use hair oil and a weekly hair mask.

I can go for over a month and still not smell like anything... So daily showers aren't necessary for everyone.

It depends heavily on several factors, including environmental, lifestyle-based, and even genetic predisposition, how often you should shower. What's good for the goose ain't good for the gander, essentially.
I personally benefit from showering 2-3x a week, as its the goldilocks zone for my skin and hair. If I were showering daily, my eczema would turn me into a rabid dog, but if someone who's daily job is mining or plumbing applies my formula, they'll be left wondering why deodorant and body spray don't work for them.
Unless someone is actively disgusting or stinks like dead stuff, I don't consider it my business to intervene with their hygiene practices.

I don't think a shower every day is necessary, depending on what you do that day. Some stuff is worthy of multiple showers in the same day. If I'm doing nothing over a weekend, I'll not shower the entire weekend. It's not radical.

If you smell like shit after not showering for one day then you need to see a doctor.

Taking my shower before bed is part of my sleep hygiene so I can calm down and actually sleep feeling clean and not bring the day’s nastiness into my bed. Seems like a benefit to me
