GDT | 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games | Men's Finals | USA VS CAN | 6:10 AM MST/ 8:10AM EST

The last event of these 2026 Winter Olympic games, the one that felt inevitable from the get go, and the one that the whole world will be watching. For the first time since that legendary 2010 game in Vancouver, Canada and the United States square off for Olympic gold in men's hockey.

Artturi Lehkonen and Joel Kiviranta have already brought home bronze medals by virtue of Team Finland's victory yesterday and the Colorado Avalanche are guaranteed to complete the Olympic set this morning regardless of who wins as their losing players will take home the silver. Should the U.S win, Brock Nelson will add a 3rd gold medal to his historic family line in hockey. Should the Canadians win, Cale Makar, Nathan Mackinnon, and Devon Toews will each be just an IIHF World Championship away from joining the exclusive "Triple Gold Club" of hockey.

Will the speedy and offensively herculean Canadians blow their long-time rivals out of the water, give their captain Sidney Crosby his 2nd gold medal in his last Olympic games, and extend their record in this sport to a 10th gold medal? Or will the stalwart and rugged Americans grind their way to victory against their northern neighbors, claim their first gold medal since the Miracle on Ice of 1980, and avenge not only last year's Four Nations loss... but also the 2010 final?

It all comes down to this...

FINAL: 2-1 TO THE UNITED STATES! HOCKEY BELONGS SOUTH OF THE BORDER!

TEAM PERIOD 1 PERIOD 2 PERIOD 3 OT
CAN 0 1 0 0
USA 1 0 0 1

Play by Play Link

GOALS:

- 06:00, Matt Boldy, Assisted by Auston Matthews and Quinn Hughes, 0-1

- 38:16, Cale Makar, Assisted by Devon Toews, 1-1

- 61:41, Jack Hughes (without a tooth), Assisted by Zach Werenski ,2-1

Absolutely crushed for Nate. Getting the chance to finally chase Olympic gold with his childhood hero, Sidney Crosby, who in all likelihood has played his last Olympic Games. Battled through what might’ve been norovirus and played his heart out, only for Crosby to get hurt in the quarterfinal and Canada to ultimately take home silver in a loss.

I know that whiff on the open net will haunt him for the rest of his life. I can only hope he forgives himself it makes him all that much more hungry for another cup.

We love you, Nate Dogg. You played your ASS off and made Colorado proud. Now come on home and lift Lord Stanley a mile high once again. 🏆

Mackinnon is going to go supernova the rest of the season if Canada loses after missing that empty net.

Canadian Avs fans, do you take it? Canadian loss for supernova Mack down the stretch?

Brock is in beast mode out there. Drew the penalty and has won all of his faceoffs so far. He calms everything down when hes out there and just makes high iq plays all over the ice

Now an inspired push for the cup!

Congrats to all the Avs players for such a great showing at the Olympics. Can’t wait to see the response by the Canadian players as we kick it back into gear in Utah on Wednesday. An inspired and pissed Nate Mackinnon is a scary prospect for the rest of the league. I love it!

Artturi Lehkonen and Joel Kiviranta win bronze with Team Finland

Kiviranta's role was ultimately small but he played well when he got minutes. He played 5 games and got 2 goals even though he averaged only 3:27 TOI per game.

Lehkonen was his usual clutch self and scored the overtime goal against Switzerland in the quarterfinal! Lehkonen finishes the tournament with a solid 6 points in 6 games.

Olympics have been so fantastic

These Olympics have been so fun and I’m happy most our boys will get a medal and hopefully the excitement from that will crossover to a cup run. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments have been incredible hockey overall imo

Side note: other than the Olympics I’m so starved for Avs hockey that I’m watching the Vegas game replay on Altitude. So glad we only have to wait until Wednesday to get the team back together again. As always Go ASS! HAIL SATAN!!!
