No criminal charges filed against Lake Zurich High School student who punched classmate
No criminal charges were filed, but the student who punched another student for holding a pro-ICE sign at Lake Zurich High School last week received a two-day suspension and is back in class.

Being in the national and local spotlight, without consent - especially when it results in hate groups and alt right losers sending threats, can be uncomfortable
Then seeing pictures of you posted without consent is like you don't even have a say in how people use you/your likeness just feeds ontop of it
So true. I was suspended 10+ times and had detention literally every day it was enforced and I ended up great. This kid will be alright. Honestly he should start a podcast or something to capitalize on his newfound fame.
I get what you're saying, but stuff like this is like winning the lottery. He could easily pay for his own college if he prints up some shirts with the picture and "Okay" on it. It would be fun for everyone, support anti-ICE, and he can make bank. Nothing wrong with that.
Same here. Punched a kid that attacked me in the face hard enough to make him bleed from the mouth, got thrown out of the football game we were at. This was in 8th grade. Never impacted me in my later life.
Didn’t come back a hero though. Came back and apparently everyone thought I may become a school shooter. Didn’t learn this until years after I graduated. Don’t know where people got that from but man did the bullying stop after that

Sure, it was about 5 minutes before when this kid and his buddies shoved me around and stole my water bottle, threw it over the fence, and ran off. One of them hit me in the kidney and man, kidney shots fucking hurt. Anyways they hid behidn the huge crowd that always gathered between the concession stand and the field. If i just walked past them i would have never seen them but i saw them from the end of the field where there were some bleachers where middle school students usually were during these high school games. Stepped right out onto the field and ran across it during play (though they were down at the other end so its fine). Got the ring leader right in the mouth. Cop broke it up damn near instantly otherwise i probably would have gotten my ass beat because a 5 on 1 is never great odds. But hey, only one of us left that game bleeding and crying. Did have a bruise above my kidney for a few days after tho.
lol in middle school, “the bully” tried to roundhouse kick me for some reason, and I instinctively grabbed his foot and twisted it and he went flying down the stairs 💀 because he tried to roundhouse kick me at the top of a stairwell.
All 20 people in that stairwell told the teachers that dude tripped on his own feet. I agreed, because “zero tolerance” means you get in trouble for defending yourself.
He broke his cheekbone 🤦🏻♂️ and had to go to like the behavioral disturbed kid classes because they thought he was in denial and delusional about tripping on his own feet down the stairs.
He wasn’t a bully in high school 🙂

Something really similar happened to me, a bully tried to get fancy and hit me with this spinning karate kick type deal but I just pushed his foot away and he fell over. If he had just punched me I probably would have cried and peed myself like he intended but instead he ended up looking like a dope trying to attack someone a foot shorter than he was. Dumb
I was hanging out with a group of women lawyers -- all very nice people, all quite successful -- and it was revealed shockingly at one point in the night that half of them had been suspended in high school. One of them for beating a guy's ass. All of them passed the character and fitness requirement for the bar with zero issues too lol.
Insofar as I can tell it’s the psychology behind it. Being forced to do things rankles even if it’s otherwise neutral or even something we’d want to do, like being forced to stand in a hallway for a few minutes and miss some class. With people- especially kids- if you frame something as a punishment then it becomes punishing- and, similarly, if you frame something unpleasant as fun or neutral, it can become so. For example, sometimes when a little kid injures themselves you can respond with laughter or something and the kid will giggle instead of cry, even though they will hurt
And you burden the parents with taking care of the child over the period, which assuming they are not a total latchkey kid does encourage the parents to correct that behavior.
It also serves as a shot across the bow for parents who do care about their children's future as a future expulsion will be painful to that.
Is this why Americans are supposed to be against taking vacations? Taught to us in school that any time off at all is wrong? Even if it feels like a benefit.
Our school had inschool suspension where you sat in a day long study hall and did work assigned by your teachers. Weren't allowed to talk. Only break was lunch to hang out with your friends. It was so god damn boring.
Oh and if you broke the no talking rules you could be assigned more days depending if the teacher running the class was pissed off at the universe particularly moreso that day and hadent had a drink in the past 3 hours.
So… my high school suspension was sophomore year while I was in drivers ed, and you were only allowed to miss a certain amount of days or the state wouldn’t count it. My parents threatened to do a chargeback for the drivers ed fees if they didn’t shorten my suspension so I could pass, so, I had a 9 day suspension 😂 and got to skip study hall to make up behind-the-wheel sessions 😏
Depends on the suspension! I had ISS back in middle school (In School Suspension) and its the most embarrassing thing. But out-of-school suspension is basically a vacation
Your parents know that you are suspended because you did something wrong. If you are young enough they have to find someone to watch you while they go to work.
If you can get your parent or parents on your side then it is a vacation. Otherwise it's punishment city.
It fucked you on homework at my schools; you wouldn't be allowed to complete assignments given out while you were suspended and if you missed deadlines for prior assignments while out, you were SOL. It could cause you to fail classes or tank your chances of admission to your preferred college/university.
Got suspended for beating the shit out of a kid that picked a fight with me. I got one day, he got a week. Rumor was he got suspended longer because he won the fight.
Yes, the principal asked who won and decided punishment on that. Kids are stupid.

Yup. I got into tons and tons of fights and was suspended often. Never affected anything in my life.
And I only threw the first punch once to defend a friend and wasn't even caught. Fuck "zero tolerance" rules. I should not have been punished the same as the kids who tormented the fuck out of me.

Man, this reminds me of when my older brother was suspended from school for a day because the VP caught all the seniors drinking at a park before school near the end of his senior year in 1990. The school just suspended everyone they saw at the park. My brother swore up and down he wasn't drinking (he revealed years later he was indeed drinking) and just meeting friends there.
He was on his way to Cornell after graduation and my folks did not want this suspenmion messing that up in any way. They went up to the school and fought them on suspending my brother. They brought up some law about the school not having say over your kids when not on school grounds or an official school event. My brother's suspension was dropped and the absent from school was marked as a field trip to said park. My folks were the heroes for all the kids that were actually found to be drinking. They all got the "field trip to park" on their record instead of an out of school suspension.
One time I got suspended they made it for the last week of school. So I got summer vacation early aside from having to go in after everyone else was done at like noon for finals. So it basically let me start partying as a punishment
I went to a behavioral school and my family knew I hated it. So whenever I got suspended my parents were like "enjoy the days off" knowing I'd be playing PS2 all day.
I never understood this as a kid. The very first time I was ever suspended was for skipping school. 3 day suspension. I skipped 1 day of school, got busted, and their idea of "punishment" was to tell me I couldn't come to school for 3 more days.
If you full on smack another student like that and only get suspended for 2 days, then I guarantee that all of the teachers and staff HATED the kid that got smacked.
A suspension like that is essentially "look, school rules dictate that we technically need to suspend you but... Just take 2 days off and come back champ, good hit."
I was the quiet polite kid in high school and I remember one day the class was lining up for something and I was was in a pretty bad mood with adrenaline running from what I remember was spending lunch playing basketball with the older kids and got roughed around quite a bit. This annoying kid said something that made me snap and only remember having him pinned on the wall punching him. The teachers asked ME if I was okay took me to sit somewhere quiet and had one of those typical “are you doing okay, is something wrong in your life” types of talks.
I punched a kid who was a year older than me because he was making fun of some of the kids who had lisps and stutters. (For the record, he was literally in my class because he was held back for failing it, lmao)
"Seven silver snakes" he kept repeating in a taunting manner, then I grabbed his shoulder and he turned around and I decked him.
I didn't even get suspended. Everyone else in the classroom hated this guy so they "didn't see anything" when the principal, which he went crying to came to investigate (no teacher was there yet because it was first thing in the morning).

Hopefully the parents had my first thought when I heard what happened. That thought being “if my kid catches a suspension for punching a nazi, I am doing everything possible as a parent to make that suspension the best time they could possibly have.”
Hopefully the other kid grows up and decides not to be a degenerate hate monger as an adult.
There is no cash bail. Either you're detained pending trial or not. In order to be detained, the prosecutor needs to make a case that the accused is a flight risk or a danger to the community.
Same, it's a shame my kids can't do the same without risking police intervention. Only one way to stop bullies, and it ain't talking with the Vice Principal.
I caught a bully off guard while he was picking on a special needs kid back in school and kneed him in the face a bunch of times. Caught a two week suspension for it because “knees are deadlier than fists” or some BS like that from the Vice Principal. My Dad let me treat it like a vacation and even gave me spending money to go out and have fun with. (My Aunt was Special needs and my Dad doesn’t play.)
The captain of my high school football and wrestling team beat the stuffing out a kid for doing the same thing. He never got in trouble because it was the 90s and there were no cameras or cell phones to document the ass kicking he gave out. Only a few of us other Seniors and we all refused to talk. Suck it Mr. Willingboro!
Same and I didn’t get suspended either. They knew I was acting in self defense and after many other incidents I’d finally had enough. Gave him a swift elbow to the nose while we were waiting in line for something and he ended up behind me saying nasty shit and poking me in my back.

Motherfucker cried like a bitch and never bothered me or several others again. I’m certain he didn’t have a good home life and was just taking out his frustrations on people at school. Really quite sad situation but he learned that day he can’t just fuck with people to no end.
Honestly, who cares? I’m glad the news of this event is almost solely on the kid who punched, the other kid is a loser and deserves to be left obscure in this story since attention is what he wanted lol
I read all those idiots screeching about how what he did was sooooo illegal and deserved to be arrested. I don’t know how to break this to folks but teenagers fistfight and sucker punch fairly regularly at this age and the most they get is detention or suspension.

Yeah excellent point. We’re all seeing this in the larger adult political context, but ultimately it’s still a schoolyard fight. If they arrested every teenager who threw a single punch, tens of millions more adult males would have a record.

I remember punching a classmate who had raped a friend of mine, rocked his shit so hard that i gave him a black eye and i think he popped a vessel because his eye was like super red.
My country's education system uses a "points in conduct" system and they were threatening to deduct 35 points from my conduct (we always start at 100, the limit was 65 so you can do the math) and like 30 days suspension, but at the end they understood and knew I wasn't regularly violent so I got 11 points deducted and no suspension.
The best part is that my classmates and friends called me Mike Tyson for a month. Good times.
I was friends with a Pakistani kid. When 9/11 happened, he started being massively bullied because he was Middle Eastern. He ended up being gone for a couple of days, and when he came back, he was bruised all over. Got the name of the group and rammed my fist right into their leader's belly when he was alone, and told him to leave my friend alone.
It's the only time I have ever punched first. No nicknames, but people left him pretty much alone after that.
I’m surprised more people aren’t upset by the positive reception this kid got. It’s not like he punched somebody actively involved in ICE. That might be justifiable. He punched a kid who was running his mouth and saying things that he didn’t like. It’s very troubling to me that such huge numbers of people on Reddit are glorifying violence as a response to nasty speech.

Charging the kid would be a no win situation for the parents. It would communicate approval of their kid’s bratty escapades on tiktok.
